Financial Squeeze in Care Industry 02/02/09

It seems that many care homes are experiencing the financial squeeze whereby local boroughs have employed outside consultants to forcibly reduce the cost of care. It could be argued that the industry perhaps needs some regulation, but gone are the days when basic level fees included a 20-50% mark-up for profit. At RCH our fees have been competitive and fair, yet we are being squeezed to reduce our fees further. These proposed price cuts will affect the viability of care homes.

What are the Mental Capacity Act 2005 Deprivation of Liberty Safegaurds (MCA DOLS)? 02/02/09

Randall Care Homes is committed to ensure that staff understand the implications for clients and staff working in the care industry. We have sent staff on training events within Brent and endeavour to empower all involved in this transition of recognition of client rights.

A new system which applies to all hospitals and care homes begins on 1st April 2009.

Some people living in hospitals and care homes can’t make their own decisions about their care and/ or treatment because they lack the mental capacity to do so. They need more care and protection than others to ensure they don’t suffer harm. Caring for and treating people who need extra protection may mean restricting their freedom to the point of depriving them of their liberty.

General Social Care Council (GSCC) 02/02/09

People working in social care will feel the impact of this registration process intensely. For the first time, support workers and carers are being given the onus to maintain their professional development within the care field. A date has not been set as to the commencement of the registration process, however look out for an autumnal start.

How will this effect the support worker?

  • You will be expected to register with GSCC and carry a Code of Practice card with you at all times.
  • You will be accountable to your practice and take responsibility for maintaining and improving your knowledge and skills.
  • You may be expected to pay a one-off fee for the registration process.

Randall Care Homes will endeavour to support staff through this transition and keep you up-to-date with news as it will inevitably change.

Mental Health Training 02/02/09
